A responsible approach to pet ownership
Taking on a pet can be an exciting time for individuals. Among the most popular such creatures in the UK are cats and dogs and it is not hard to see why. These animals can be extremely cute and affectionate, and some are highly intelligent too.
However, it is important that people think carefully before getting such new additions to their homes. After all, they are a big responsibility and their wellbeing must be protected.
For example, it is crucial that the creatures have access to the right pet foods and that their environments are suitable for them. Meanwhile, they also need plenty of exercise and, particularly in the case of dogs, human company.
One of the other issues to bear in mind is pet health. As medical science continues to progress, the range of medications and treatments available to dogs and cats goes up. This is great news for the animals, as it means they can live longer and happier lives.
However, for owners there is the complication of money. After all, these medical interventions do not come for free, they must be paid for and sometimes bills can mount up. Thankfully, by heading to an online pet shop such as Petmeds.co.uk, it is possible to get many products at competitive prices, which can save people cash.
For example, if consumers are seeking Previcox, Fortekor and other such medications for their pets, they should not struggle to find them using the firm’s website.
But there are other potential expenses that are far greater, such as operations. With this in mind, it can be wise for pet owners to invest in insurance when they take on their animals. This helps spread the cost of medical treatments.
Itchy Dog treatments
Dog Itchy Skin Treatment Options
Today more than ever our pets are experiencing itchy skin. The most common questions pet professionals are asking is why the sudden increase, say from a decade ago? Well the answer is that our dog’s today are exposed to so many new environmental and chemical substances that were not around 10-years back. In fact dog itchy skin problems are now the number one concern and treatments at veterinarian’s offices. This includes dot spots, yeast infections, rashes, and even bacterial growth in the ears.
So what can pet owners do to help their loved ones that are experiencing chronic scratching and dog itchy skin issues? To begin with it is important to bath your dog at least monthly with a gentle dog shampoo. Organic shampoos are great for pets as they tend to be very mild and wash off nicely. Also be sure to select a dog’s shampoo that is rich with Aloe-Vera and oatmeal. Both of these ingredients will nourish the dog’s skin and coat, while at the same time moisturizing and replenishing any dry skin. It may also be a good idea to look for a shampoo which contains zinc-pca for dogs, as this ingredient does a great job rebalancing dry skin and flaking, or dandruff like symptoms.
What Type of Shampoo is Good for itchy dog paws Problems
So know we know what type of shampoo to look for to Itchy Dog treatments skin, how often should you bath your dog, and what should you look out for. For the first question, it is not a good idea to bath a dog anymore than once every other week. This is perfectly acceptable assuming you are using a good shampoo as described above. On the other hand, a dog should be bathed at least every other month to clear its skin and coat from bacterial and yeast infections if any may be developing.
When you bath your dog with an oatmeal and aloe-vera shampoo you will quickly notice that there is a nice shine to the coat or hair. You may also notice less scratching – although this may take up to a week. As the oatmeal and Aloe-Vera work in and begin moisturizing the dog dry skin will begin to clear out and healthy skin cells will develop. Again, this may take up to a few weeks as the skin reacts slowly to change.
Also be sure to towel dry, or lightly blow dry your dog immediately after bathing to keep the essential oils from drying out. Be sure not to over dry if using a blow dryer, and be sure not to use water that is very hot or cold; this can also lead to dog itchy skin, and even worse skin problems down the road.

Is Crate Training Your Pet Cruel Or Not?
Some people are under the misconception that putting a dog in a crate is cruel to the animal. If this is done improperly, then yes I agree. However, if the Crate Training Technique is implemented properly this is not so. With this Article I hope to explain and convince you how and why this is beneficial to both you and your pet.
Let us begin with the improper uses of a dog crate. First and most important is never, ever use a crate to punish your animal. You will only create the idea that this is a bad place for him. Another improper use is to keep your pet in the crate for long periods of time. Depending on the age of your pet, the time limits will be different. For a list of time limitations by ages, you can go to a detailed guide on Crate Training which I will provide a link to below. Also, please teach your children to respect the dog’s crate. They should not be permitted to play in the crate, or pester the dog while he is in it.
Now let me explain why Crate Training your pet is important. Your pet has a den instinct inherited from ancestors years and years ago. If a crate is introduced properly to your pet, he will think of this as his den or safe place. Your dog will feel that his crate is a secure place for him to go when he is tired or stressed. In reality, his crate serves to replicate the sense of a den that he instinctively craves.
Another feature a crate can offer is it can be used as a great technique for housebreaking your pet. Most puppies will not soil their den, and if done properly this holds true in the crate as well. Make sure your crate is the correct size for your pet. You do not want to make his area too big. Your pet should be able to stand and turn around comfortably. Most of the Midwest styles come with a divider panel which let you adjust the size of the crate to grow with your puppy. This is a great feature because you only need to purchase one crate. Next you should get your pet on a schedule for potty breaks. Take your pet outside 15 to 30 minutes after each meal until he relieves himself. Praise him a great deal when he does. Choose a word you would like him to associate with doing his business. I use the word “make”. When you take your pet outside, tell him let’s go “make”. When he accomplishes this, praise him with “good make”. Depending on your dog’s age will determine how often during the day and night he should be taken outside. You can use the link to the Crate Training information I have mentioned above to find your pets time limitations.
Crate Training also helps to keep your home from being destroyed in the early puppy chewing stages. It is a fact that all puppies like to chew. They are like children and need to be taught what is expected of them. Until they are over this stage a crate is the perfect place for your pet when your are not able to keep an eye on them. Place a few chew toys with some treats inside and they will be happy and content while you are busy.
I have used this method with my dogs. I am a die hard animal lover, and if this was cruel in any way I would be the first one screaming to stop this practice. My current dog is a German Shepherd we adopted at 5 weeks of age. He was badly injured and abandoned at an Emergency Vet. To make a long story short, they fixed him up and offered him to us. We started Crate Training him right away. When he was about 2 years old we decided to take his crate down. Buster (our German Shepherd) cried and moaned the entire night. We actually had to put his crate back up. That night he slept like a baby all night long. Now, does that sound cruel to you?
How To Groom Your Jack Russell
Dog ownership is a big decision, especially if you’re considering a Jack Russell. You should consider medical expenses, food, frequent walks, and also grooming needs. Jacks require a lot of grooming to maintain proper appearance and health, so you’ll also need to know how to groom him.
Different Jack Russell Coats
Consider the coat of the Jack Russell Terrier. These coats are all course with a double coat, but tend to be divided in three different categories: smooth, which is the shortest; broken, which is a bit longer; a rough; which is the longest and scruffiest. Grooming is absolutely essential to keep these coats tame and help with shedding-these dogs are big shedders. It’s a common misconception that this is a shed-less breed but you’ll soon find out that this isn’t the case, and if anything these dogs shed just as much (if not more) as any other.
Keep Grooming Simple
Even though Jack’s shed a good amount, grooming them isn’t all that difficult. Give your dog lots of brushing to maintain a healthy coat and to diminish the amount of their shedding. A bristle brush will be ideal, as would a rubber mitt, and if you’ve got a terrier with a broken or rough coat you’ll probably need a stripping comb as well. Rough coats will need stripping at various points during the year, but you can save a trip to the groomers if you have your own comb and can do this yourself.
Do Owners Need To Trim?
Owners may need to trim their Jack Russell while grooming if the Jack’s coat demands it. Smooth coats don’t require much trimming as the fur is naturally short, but rough and broken coats can grow wild if left untrimmed. Typically this just involves a few snips of the eyebrows to keep the hair out of their eyes and keeping their beards tame, so you can do this yourself and maybe take him to a professional from time to time.
Bathing Your Jack Russell Terrier
Bathing is obviously an essential part of dog ownership. Considering how active and wild Jack Russells can be, it should be immediately obvious why they need frequent cleanings. Be careful not to wash your dog too often however. A few baths a year should be plenty, as too many is likely to cause irritation that can cause further problems. Don’t think that regular baths will prevent shedding either, because the only way to combat that is through brushing and vacuuming on a regular basis.
Further Grooming Points To Consider
The last part of Jack Russell Terrier grooming is watching their nails and teeth. Trim your dog’s nails when they grow long enough to click against the floor. Their teeth need to be regularly brushed as well for proper oral hygiene, and while both of these things can be done at home, if in doubt your vet will always be able to help.
So, Jack Russell grooming is essential if you want to keep him happy, healthy and looking great. Regular brushing (both teeth and coat), nail clipping and baths will be all you need, and if you get everything into your routine it can be over before you know it.

Older Dogs Health Care Needs
Caring for an Older Dog
For most people our dogs are like part of our family. We take care of them, and they reward us with unconditional love and loyalty. As our dogs age, we need to be aware of their changing needs. A dog enters his senior years at about the age of seven. This can vary depending on the breed or the size of the dog. Larger dogs typically have a shorter life span than smaller dogs do. As you care for your older dog, you should pay special attention to their nutrition, exercise, mobility, and hygiene.
An older dog’s nutritional needs can change due to many factors. Along with a slower metabolism, they are also not as active as they used to be. This can lead to obesity. Their digestion becomes more difficult as there is a natural decrease in enzymes. They are more likely to become dehydrated. There are some things that can be done to help meet an older dog’s nutritional needs. Begin by feeding a low calorie dog food twice a day. Wet food can be used to help prevent dehydration. Fresh food such as meat, vegetables and rice is also a great option whenever possible. There are some supplements that can be added to the diet to help as well. Mashed yam is good to promote healthy skin. Grapefruit seed extract helps with digestion, and glucosamine and chondroitin can be given for joints and muscles.
Another change that happens with an older dog is their activity level decreases. They still need exercise, but due to less energy and more aches and pains they do not get as much. Activities should be adjusted so that they are lower impact. Instead of going for a run, take a long walk. Swimming can be good exercise for any dogs with arthritis or mobility issues. Exercise can help prevent stiff joints that make moving around difficult. A dog who has mobility issues may benefit from the use of raised food bowls and thoughtfully placed ramps in the house.
An older dog also needs to have extra care when it comes to their hygiene. Good dental care such as brushing teeth can help avoid gum disease. Dental problems can make chewing food and playing with toys painful. Incontinence can become a problem even if your dog has never had accidents before. Taking them out for more frequent potty trips may help. Using indoor potty pads may be necessary as well. Always try to remember that as your dog gets older they can not help the things that are happening. Kindness and patience are the most important things we can give to make our dogs comfortable and happy as they age.

How to Understand Dog Behaviors and What They Mean?
Dogs are always special because they are the sweetest pets and faithful ones too. If you are the master of a dog then you will have to keep certain things in your mind. Training the dogs in the best possible way is very important. Without proper obedience training you cannot make your dog well mannered.
If you want to claim your pet to be one of your family members then you should always try to make him well behaved. But before that you should try to understand dog behaviors and what they mean.
If you try and understand the dog psychology then you can surely get proper results. It is important to learn how the dogs think. If you do not get an insight regarding your mind then your training sessions might be a waste.
The first thing that you need to remember is that dogs always belong to a pack and they have the tendency to follow the pack leader. Without a leader they seem to be lost. You need to become that leader so that he can follow you.
If you are successful in putting yourself in the shoes of the leader then your teachings and trainings will get inside the dog’s mind faster. They will also start respecting you. The top dog training advice always suggests that you should start with the common and easy commands.
Stay and sit are the most common commands. Other than these commands you also need to start potty training dogs. You should start this training from day one so that the dogs do not create a mess in your house. It is very important to maintain a routine for your dogs.
This is also one of the things that you need to understand about dog psychology. You should take your dog out every day at the same point of time. Take him out after his meal every day. After a few days he will ask you to take him out yourself.
A proper dog obedience school can help you get the best idea about the dog psychology. If you understand dog behaviors and what they mean then you can surely solve lots of problems. First of all you will find the dog wagging their tail.
This is done by a dog whenever he is very happy or sees his master after a long time. Similarly there are meanings for digging, barking and sniffing. If you fail to understand the dog psychology properly then you might not be able to protect your dog from falling into bad habits.
When you teach the commands to your dogs you should give at least a week’s time to him to get accustomed with the command. Other than your voice you also need to teach him hand signals.
If he fails to get a command correctly then make sure you do not lose your cool and punish him. This can create an adverse effect on the dog’s mind. You should always handle your dog very carefully.
